Welcome to the call for nominations! Each year the Florida Communication Association (FCA) presents awards at the annual convention to acknowledge the efforts of outstanding members, industry leaders, and community partners. We are currently accepting nominations for the October 2023 convention. Interested individuals may nominate others or may nominate themselves. Nominees can be:
- Full/Tenured Faculty
- Adjunct Professors/Instructors
- Post-Doctoral Faculty
- Graduate Students
- Undergraduate Students
- Industry Professionals/Organizations
- Community partners/Organizations
Faculty and Early Career Scholar Awards
Teacher of the Year
This award honors educators, instructors, and professors who have demonstrated excellence in teaching. Nominees must teach courses in communication and have taught in some capacity for at least two years. Nominees are not limited to full-time faculty, but can also be adjuncts, instructors, early career scholars, and postdocs. Educators teaching in a wide range of modalities (e.g., fully online, fully in-person, hybrid, etc.) are encouraged to apply. The Award Committee will select the winner based on proof of teaching inclusivity, accessibility, innovation, creativity, and impact. Nominators should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A nomination letter not exceeding two pages (single or double spaced)
- A current CV/resume emphasizing teaching
- A brief teaching portfolio (5 pages max; single or double spaced)
- At least two other letters of recommendation (at least one should be written by a student)
- Any other supporting documents that would show evidence of teaching excellence
* Graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate student assistants should be nominated for the Student Teaching Award.*

Scholar of the Year
This award honors those who have demonstrated exceptional scholarly ability through research and/or publication. Nominees must be active researchers in the field of communication, but do not have to be restricted to academic research. Researchers in industry are welcome to be nominated for this award. The Award Committee will select the winner based on innovative or creative research, methodological rigor, and cohesive research agendas. Those engaged in inclusive and accessible forms of research are highly encouraged to apply. Additionally, nominees must have presented at a conference and/or been published in a journal within the past five years. Nominators should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A nomination letter not to exceed two pages (single or double spaced)
- A current CV/resume emphasizing research/scholarly endeavors
- At least two other letters of recommendation
- Any other supporting documents that would show evidence of research excellence
*Graduate research assistants, graduate student researchers, and undergraduate researchers should be nominated for the Student Scholar Award.*

Outstanding Service
This award honors those who have participated in service to national, regional, state, or local communities within and outside of the discipline. Those who have demonstrated dedication to bridging the gap between academia, industry, and community partners are encouraged to apply. The Award Committee will select the winner based on proof of service contributions (at any level – national, regional, state, local, university, department, etc.), populations reached, DEI initiatives, mentoring, and a demonstrated commitment to serving others. Nominators should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A nomination letter not exceeding two pages (single or double spaced)
- A current CV/resume emphasizing service
- Statement of Service (1500 words max)
- At least two additional letters of recommendation
- Any other supporting documents that would show evidence of service excellence

Industry Leader of the Year
This award honors industry leaders, professional organizations, and community partners who exemplify outstanding communication practice. Nominees must be industry professionals, professional organizations, or community partners who have committed to serve their community through exemplary communication practice or within the industry of communication. The Award Committee will select the winner based on effective corporate social responsibility, transparency, inclusivity, accessibility, community outreach, and philanthropic contributions.
Nominators should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A nomination letter not exceeding two pages (single or double spaced)
- A brief personal or business/organization portfolio including their mission/vision statement, communication work highlights, and impact to the surrounding community (5 pages max)
- At least two additional recommendation letters
- Any other supporting documents that would show evidence of outstanding communication practice (e.g., client/costumer reviews, community partner feedback, accomplishments, etc.)

Student Awards
Student Teaching Award
This award recognizes outstanding graduate student teaching at all levels of post-secondary education. The Award Committee will select the winner based on evidence of inclusive and accessible practices as well as innovative and creative pedagogy. Students who have taught across a wide range of subject matter or in multiple modalities are highly encouraged to apply. Nominators should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A nomination letter not exceeding two pages (single or double spaced)
- A current CV/resume emphasizing teaching
- A teaching philosophy (one page max; single or double spaced)
- At least two other recommendation letters (one from an undergraduate student and one from a faculty member/staff/supervisor)
- Any other supporting documents that would show evidence of teaching excellence (e.g., student feedback, supervisor feedback, teaching evaluations/assessments, etc.)

Student Scholar Award
This award recognizes outstanding scholarly activities by undergraduate and graduate students at all levels of post-secondary education. The Award Committee will select the winner based on evidence of research studies or research-informed creative projects, the ability to meet high academic standards of writing and research processes, ethical considerations, and innovative research endeavors. Nominators should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A nomination letter not exceeding two pages (single or double spaced)
- A current CV/resume emphasizing research/scholarly activities
- A research statement (one page max; single or double spaced)
- Sample of research (please indicate whether the research has been published or is under review)
- At least two additional recommendation letters (one from a faculty mentor)
- Any other supporting documentation that would show evidence of research excellence (e.g., conference abstracts/presentations, publications, brief writing sample, etc.)

Student Service Award
This award recognizes undergraduate and graduate student to national, regional, state, or local communities within and outside of the discipline. The Award Committee will select the winner based on evidence of service contributions (e.g., committees, chairs/moderators, reviewers, leadership, etc.), populations reached, application of communication knowledge, mentoring, and commitment to serving others. Nominators should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A nomination letter not exceeding two pages (single or double spaced)
- A current CV/resume emphasizing service
- Statement of Service (500 words max)
- At least two additional letters of recommendation
- Any other supporting documents that would show evidence of service excellence

FCA Grant
The FCA is proud to provide a $500 grant to undergraduate or graduate students to help them support or accomplish an outstanding communication-based research study, creative/applied project, or service project. Proposals may be submitted by an individual student or a group of students, but should include at least one faculty mentor/supervisor even if they are not directly involved in the project. The Award Committee will select the winning proposal based on innovation, creativity, scholastic contributions, practical applications, and impact. Recipients of the grant are required to return to the following year's convention and present the results or outcome of the project to the FCA members. The FCA Grant may be applied to projects or aspects of projects including but not limited to: theses/dissertations, extended semester research studies, applied projects, participant recruitment, and research (not conference) travel.
Applicants should submit the following as a single PDF packet:
- A research proposal not exceeding 10 pages (single or double spaced)
- A cover page including the title of the study/project as well as the names, affiliations, and contact information of those conducting/supervising the study/project.
- A summary of the study/project including background information and a rationale
- Study/Project objectives and any preliminary results
- Proposed research activities including a detailed overview of the methods/processes, variables (if applicable), data collection and analysis procedures (if applicable), and any ethical considerations
- A budget justification outlining how the $500 will be used
- A brief statement of acknowledgement or impact by a faculty/staff mentor or supervisor on the study/project (one page max; single or double spaced)
- Any other supporting documents that would contribute to the proposal (e.g., recommendation letters, published articles highlighting the success of existing projects, impact statements from those who are/would be served by the project, etc.)
Interested students should submit a detailed proposal not to exceed two typed pages to Immediate Past President Lakelyn Taylor at lakelyn.taylor@ucf.edu no later than 11:59pm ET on September 15th, 2023.
